Chronicles of a Human Punching Bag

The Business of Boxing: Lessons Learned in the Ring applied to Life.

I tore a tendon and presently don’t box but these lessons stuck….

It’s Mental, Baby! – In whatever it is you do, overcoming the person you see in the mirror is the real battle. Believe in yourself and your abilities.

You’re stronger than you think, but you’re not invincible: This realization can bring humility, a trait that will help you grow as a person.

The Importance of Showing Up: Only God knows why I showed up every day to do something that I didn’t enjoy and sucked at. Looking back, I respect myself for pushing through and learning from my experience.

Set SMART Goals: You Have to want it: Be the Best for Yourself: Initially, I didn’t want to let my coaches down, but I soon realized that greatness would require dedication outside of training sessions. It’s important to identify and understand why you’re working towards a particular goal and take intentional actions towards achieving it.

Confidence: Knowing how to throw a punch doesn’t mean you should use it as a weapon. Fighting becomes less about proving yourself and more about self-defense.

Consistency/The Bad Days: There were more bad days than good days, especially at the beginning, but the key is to keep going.

If you never know failure, you will never know success – Sugar Ray Leonard

Own It—-Accountability: It’s easier to beat yourself up than to be objective and ask how you can improve. Beating yourself up isn’t worthwhile, so it’s important to be self-aware and focus on areas where you can improve.

Take Breaks: Sometimes, the best thing you can do is take a break. Resting and recovering is just as important as training and pushing yourself.

Composure: Remaining calm and poised when the pressure is high is crucial in boxing and in life. It’s essential to remember that the person across from you may be feeling the same way, regardless of their experience level. We find out about the true nature of people when they are under pressure.

Overall, boxing has taught me a lot about mental strength, perseverance, and self-improvement. These lessons are transferable to any aspect of life, and I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had in the ring.
